Last summer, while the pandemic was still raging, Molly Barth was considering moving from her one-bedroom apartment in Jersey City, New Jersey, to Brooklyn, New York.

Many of Barth’s friends live in Brooklyn, and Barth, 27, and her boyfriend, Nicholas Corrado, 26, “wanted to try a new neighborhood,” she told CNBC Make It. The couple were also in desperate need of additional space for their work-from-home facilities. Barth is a strategist at a Manhattan consulting firm and Corrado works in real estate.

There was only one problem: the amenities offered in apartment buildings in Brooklyn were pale compared to those they had become accustomed to in Jersey.

“None of the stuff we found really piqued our interest,” says Barth. “So we came back to Jersey City.” They actually stayed in their same luxury building, but were upgraded to a larger one-story apartment.

Barth and Corrado went from $ 3,012 per month for a one-bedroom in Jersey City to $ 4,320 per month for a two-bedroom apartment.

Office space transformed into two bedrooms

The main priority when moving last summer was to find a location with a home office that they could use to “have more space and flexibility with our work schedules,” says Barth. (She will have a hybrid schedule even after her office reopens in September.)

“Before, when we both had phone calls, one person had to go in the bedroom and one person had to stay in the living room,” she says.

The couple searched for apartments with a second bedroom or a small den, with a monthly budget capped at $ 4,500. “We found a twin bed that fell within our budget, which was really great,” says Barth.

Now with two bedrooms, Barth typically works in the room they’ve turned into an office during the day, while Corrado works in the living room and kitchen. Then at night he goes to the office to play video games with his friends.

The office also helps create a division between work and home, says Barth. “Having my desk, I can focus a lot more in there,” she says. “Then when I want to take a break, I can come over here and talk to her, hang out on the couch a bit. “

Pay more for amenities

The amenities of the apartment are what sold Barth for his stay in Jersey City. “We get a lot more for our money here [than in Brooklyn], even if we pay a large rent, ”she said.

For Barth, the building’s gym, which has several Peloton bikes and a gym, is a huge plus. “I am a huge Peloton fan; I do the rides several times a week, ”she says. “It was another thing we thought about when we moved: I would probably want to buy my own Peloton bike if we moved to another apartment.”

There is also a rooftop resident pool, with a grill area and a dog park. “We started having friends over and it’s really fun spending time by the pool, especially when it’s so hot in the summer here,” she says.

The building also has a 24-hour concierge service, a parcel room, and an Amazon Hub for pickups and returns. There’s even a cafe in the lobby, with a large seating area for working, holding meetings, or relaxing.

“The best views of New York”

Jersey City is located in northeastern New Jersey and borders on Lower Manhattan. From Barth’s dining room table, she can see the southern tip of Manhattan through the window. Elsewhere in the apartment, they offer views of the Empire State Building and Midtown.

“I always tell people, you get the best views of New York from Jersey City,” Barth says.

Barth, who is originally from Montclair, New Jersey, says she often grieves from friends and colleagues for living in New Jersey.

“There are a lot of misconceptions about Jersey City that it’s not really a fun or interesting place,” she says. But Barth says she enjoys the laid-back vibe and sense of community she finds there.

When Barth lived on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, “I was never really able to escape,” she says. “I also worked in Manhattan and felt like when I got home there was still so much going on and it was so busy that I never really got to relax.”

“What I love about Jersey City is that there’s a lot less of that intensity and that high energy,” Barth says. She and Corrado often take a walk along the Hudson River and go out to eat at local restaurants.

And if she needs to go to Manhattan for work or to see friends, it’s only a five-minute train ride from her Jersey City stop to Exchange Place at Manhattan’s World Trade Center.
