Before construction

One Journal Square was first acquired by Kushner Companies in 2014. A updated description on their website details that the construction will bring to a multitude of landscapes: “In the heart of Jersey City’s booming Journal Square neighborhood, our 2 million square foot, $800 million towers are under development. 1 Journal Square is expected to rise 66 stories with a podium of vibrant retail, amenities and cultural uses. New public transport links, a curated sculpture garden and a sprawling new public plaza at the base of the buildings will integrate 1 Journal Square into the urban fabric of the district.

The project, however, ran into legal issues between the developer, Kushner Company, and the City of Jersey City and the mayor who took two years to settle before moving forward.

Fast forward to June 15, Mayor Steven Fulop tweeted the latest news that construction will finally begin: “Tomorrow we are opening 1JSQ – it’s been a long road, but here we are with the largest single residential project in NJ (it will be the largest building in this photo). We have several 60-story buildings + several 30-story buildings under construction here. Skyline is changing.

The next day, the mayor added news of a target being part of the commercial space: “As part of this site @Target will open at JSQ on the ground floor at 1JSQ. It will be a great anchor + huge help for area residents on many fronts as we add retail options within walking distance. It was a complicated project, for sure, but we are finally there.
