Andrews and DaSilva earn weekly NJAC honors

PITMAN, NJ – The New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) announced its weekly honorees today, Monday, April 4, and the New Jersey City University men’s volleyball team saw two of its own honored. Senior outside hitter Jonathan Andrews (North Bergen, NJ/North Bergen) was named NJAC Player of the Week for the third time this season, while junior middle tackle Brandon DaSilva (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) was also selected as NJAC Defensive Player of the Week for the third time this year.

Andrews dominated last week as he led the Gothic Knights to a 4-0 record in Skyline Conference play, as well as the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament. He finished the week with 54 kills (5.40/set) over 90 swings with just 12 errors (.467 hit percentage), adding eight aces (.80/set), 18 digs (1.80/set ) and 62.5 points (6.25/set ). He started out needing to play just one set in the three-set sweep at St. Joseph’s College-Brooklyn on Tuesday, March 28, but was still an error-free 4-on-6 on the swings. Then, in his senior night game against Yeshiva University (3-0 win) on Thursday, March 31, Andrews tied a career high with a record 26 kills on 43 kills with five errors (.488) – including 12 kills in just the first set – to go with three aces and five digs. Saturday, April 2’s road tri-game started with him scoring nine kills and four errors on 16 swings (.313) to go with five aces and a trio of digs in the game and the season. Victory 3-0 against the College of Mont Saint Vincent. Finally, in Sarah Lawrence College’s season finale sweep, Andrews again led all players with 15 kills and three errors on 25 swings (.480) to go with the game’s top 10 digs for his third double-double of the season. .

DaSilva was also a big part of NJCU’s four wins – which gave the team its first 20-win season since 2009. The three-time captain finished with 12 blocks (1.20/set) – including nine solo – to go with six digs (0.60/set). Offensively, he finished with 25 kills (2.50/set) and eight errors from 34 swings (.500 hit percentage) to go with three aces. He started with a game-best two blocks and seven kills and one error on eight swings (.750) in the three-set sweep at the Bears on Tuesday. Then, in Thursday’s home sweep of the Maccabees, DaSilva again led all players with two total blocks (both solo) to go with two assists, an ace, a dig and six kills on eight swings. with two errors (.500). In Saturday’s opener, he finished with a game-high three total blocks (two solo) to go with two assists, an ace and six kills on seven hits with an error (.714) during the 3-0 victory against CMSV. To close out the regular season, DaSilva helped finish the Gryphons 3-0 by leading all players with five total blocks (four solo), five digs, an ace and six kills. He’s leading both the NJAC and Skyline in blocks/set for the season.

Andrews, DaSilva and the rest of the Jersey City squad return to action Thursday night, April 7, as the No. 2 seed in the Skyline Conference Tournament. The Gothic Knights will host No. 3 Ramapo College at the John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center (JMAC) in what will be a rubber game for the 2022 season.
