Holloway’s assistant coaching staff is complete

Shaheen Holloway rounds out Seton Hall Basketball’s assistant coaching staff with the hiring of Corey Lowery, a Division 2 head coach who won big at the junior college level in Garden State, USA TODAY NETWORK New Jersey has learned from several sources.

Lowery served as the head coach at D-2 Lincoln University in Pennsylvania. His side finished 18-10 last season, their first full campaign at work after a pandemic-shortened 3-0 mark in 2020-21.

Prior to that, he compiled a 245-63 record (a .795 winning percentage) over 10 years as a junior college skipper at Essex County College and Middlesex County College. His Essex County teams made two semi-final appearances in the NJCAA Division II Tournament.

Between his college and Lincoln stints, Lowery served as Saint Peter’s director of player development from 2018-2020, Holloway’s first two seasons at the helm there.

Lowery has spent most of his life in New Jersey. As a player, he was a combo guard at Rutgers-Newark before graduating in 1998. He began his coaching career at Hillside High School, eventually serving as the Comets’ head coach for four seasons before becoming assistant at Division 2 Bloomfield College.

He will join Rasheen Davis and Ryan Whalen as the Pirates’ three assists. The hires provide insight into Holloway’s mindset as he takes the helm of the Pirates:

  • He bets on himself as an ace scout. To fill this position, he was looking for an assistant with head coaching experience; Lowery has a proven track record in player development and bench coaching. Whalen is also an Xs and Os guy, known for his tactics and scouting. Holloway and Davis are the staff coaches with longstanding Division I recruiting relationships.
  • It’s also a nod to the reality that NIL offers are going to be a part of recruiting coaches now. Witness the effort of G3 Marketing, a company founded by former Seton Hall basketball manager Eric Liebler that specializes in connecting athletes and fans, to take the lead in NIL opportunities for athletes from Lobby.
  • Holloway values loyalty and familiarity. All three assistant coaches at Seton Hall – Lowery, Davis and Whalen – worked with him in building Saint Peter’s.
  • The staff is super local. The three assistants and the head coach will have deep roots in the metropolitan area. Davis is a New Yorker and Whalen is a Shore Regional High School alumnus.
