Jersey City mayor Steve Fulop has tested positive for COVID-19, the mayor said.

“I have no symptoms but getting tested was important before seeing family for the holidays,” Fulop said on Twitter. “I am grateful for the protection offered by the vaccine / booster as the situation would be different without them”

The mayor’s positive test comes as Jersey City faces a massive increase in COVID-19 cases in recent days.

The city’s COVID dashboard reported a new 7-day daily average of 240 new cases as of December 22, and the city recorded its highest number of cases since the start of the pandemic with 383 cases.

Currently available COVID-19 vaccines have been shown to be effective in reducing the risk of infection, serious illness or death from the virus.
