Kaizer Chiefs jersey could weigh heavily on players, Stuart Baxter
Kaizer Chiefs manager Stuart Baxter admits the Amakhosi shirt could weigh heavily in pressure situations, following their goalless draw with TS Galaxy on Tuesday.
The Soweto giants dropped two points at home to a stubborn Galaxy side, missing a chance to move into second place behind leaders Mamelodi Sundowns.
Amakhosi has struggled to make the most of recent games, proving inconsistent at a time when he had a slight chance of catching Sundowns. As things stand, they may have said goodbye to any hopes of winning the title.
“When I worked with the England national teams, we used to say the England shirt can be heavy. It can be heavy. When you’re not playing well and the expectations are high, it’s heavy. I think that’s the case with Chiefs I think the expectations are high and I think the process of doing no harm, as you say, and being part of the mix…sometimes that is forgotten because we want so much. This can be both good and bad, can’t this?” Baxter told the media after the matchup with the Rockets.
“We try to get the message out to the players so that they play freely and without anxiety, but it’s difficult. When it’s in a situation where you think well ‘we should actually do better than that’… it sometimes weighs heavily on the players. It’s a difficult question to address, especially during a match.
