Men take fifth place, women place sixth at NJAC Cross Country Championships
GALLOWAY, New Jersey – The New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) hosted their 2021 Cross Country Championships on Saturday, October 30. The races were organized by the University of Stockton. The University of New Jersey City women’s team took sixth place, while the NJCU’s men took fifth place.
The 6 km women’s championship race started at 10:30 am The Gothic Knights were again led by the main captain. April Gutierrez (Jersey City, NJ / Dickinson), who placed 27th among scoring runners and 32nd overall with a time of 26: 07.80. Behind her in 29th place among the scoring runners was junior Tiffany Ortiz (Jersey City Academy Charter, NJ / University) who posted a time of 26: 52.70, which placed 41st overall. First-year student Nyla Boyd (Thomson, GA / Thomson) and second year students Jackeline Lopez (Elizabeth, NJ / Elizabeth) and Polina Agutina (Evaptoria, Ukraine / Number 6) also marked for Gothic knights. Boyd was 41st among scoring runners and 72nd overall with a time of 30: 52.50, followed by Lopez in 43rd (75th overall) with a personal best of 32: 29.50. Agutina placed 45th (79th overall) with a personal best of 33: 59.10.
On the men’s side, the 8K Championship race started at 11:15 am and the NJCU was again led by a sophomore. Julius Libutsi (Jersey City, NJ / William L. Dickinson), who placed 28th among the scoring runners with a personal best time of 27: 40.00, or 49th overall. Junior Jaime Tlatelpa (Jersey City Academy Charter, NJ / University) was the Gothic Knights’ second-best finisher as he placed 30th among scoring runners (55th overall) with a season-best time of 27: 59.10. Another second year student, Jake Sisk (Piscataway, NJ / Piscataway), placed 34th among scorers (68th overall) with a personal best time of 29: 02.00 and was closely followed by junior Jose Recinos (Union City, NJ / Union City), who posted his best time of the season in 29: 12.20, earned him a 36th place (72nd overall).
Three other sophomores finished in the top seven for Jersey City. Erich Fennelly (Stewartsville, NJ / Phillipsburg) placed 37th among scorers (74th overall) with a personal best time of 29: 21.90, followed later to 38th (75th overall) by Topu Saha (Jersey City, NJ / William L. Dickinson) and his best time of the season of 29: 27.10. Reaching 39th place (82nd overall) was Elvis Rosas (West New York, NJ / Memorial) with a season best time of 30: 07.60. Four other runners also competed for the NJCU men that day.
Overall, the women’s 6K title was won by host Ospreys – ranked fourth in the most recent USTFCCCA Metro Region rankings – who finished four in the top 10. The individual title was that of Jane Wagner of Ramapo College. The men’s 8k was won by the College of New Jersey – also ranked fourth in the most recent USTFCCCA Metro Region ranking – which had five in the top 11. The individual title was that of Chris Anderson of Ramapo.
Now that the NJACs are over, the Gothic Knights are focused on the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championships, which will be held at the Hudson Valley Sports Dome in Milton, NY on Saturday, November 6. The Jersey City runners advance to the NCAA Division III Regional Championships on Saturday, November 13.
