Men’s volleyball closes St. Joe’s-Brooklyn, moves to second place in Skyline rankings

BROOKLYN – The New Jersey City University men’s volleyball team traveled to St. Joseph’s College-Brooklyn on Tuesday night, March 29, where the Gothic Knights again swept in three sets (25-9, 25 -5, 25-9). Jersey City took on the Bears this weekend in the NJCU Tri-Match, where the Greens and Golds dominated on their home courts at the John J. Moore Athletics & Fitness Center (JMAC). Heading into the end of Skyline Conference play, the Gothic Knights are currently tied for second in the standings, with Ramapo College.

Jersey City (18-8-8-3 Skyline) never let up in tonight’s game against the Bears (1-17, 0-14 Skyline). As the Greens and Ors maintained their momentum, the hosts struggled to break double digits in the opening set. In the second set, NJCU led by 18 before St. Joe’s could score a run on the board. The third set followed the previous two – Brooklyn managed to score a few kills and an ace on serve, but that wasn’t enough to stop the Gothic reign.

Three-time junior captain and reigning New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Defensive Player of the Week Brandon DaSilva (Kearny, NJ/Kearny)with reigning NJAC and Skyline Rookie of the Week rookie outside hitter Anthony Trivers (Washington Township, NJ/Washington Township) led the Gothic Knights with seven wins apiece – DaSilva also recorded two blocks in tonight’s contest. Junior Opposite Chris Castillo (North Bergen, NJ/High Tech) followed closely with six victories. Senior setter Leo Ferrari (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) landed a season-high five aces, as well as Trivers with three and a senior passer Aaron Mantille (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) with two. trivers and junior Nico Figueroa (Jersey City, NJ/County Prep) counted five digs each, as well as Mantilla with three. Mantilla led with 25 assists, followed by Ferrari with eight and senior Daniel Esteva (Union, NJ/Union) with two. Senior outside hitter Jonathan Andrews (North Bergen, NJ/North Bergen) and junior tri-captain opposite James Bajor (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne) each found a single ace, in addition to a few points added throughout the first set.
