Men’s Volleyball eliminates Alvernia and fights through tight sets with Misericordia at Tri-Match

DALLAS, Pennsylvania – The University of New Jersey City men’s volleyball team stayed on the road to participate in the Misericordia University Tri-game on Saturday, February 26. Both matches were close, especially in the five-set win over Alvernia University. The Gothic Knights eventually claimed victory in the first match of the day, but were unable to achieve the same result against the host team. Jersey City lost 3-1 to the Cougars in that one.

Match #1: NJCU 2, Alvernia 3 (18-25, 25-21, 23-25, 25-23, 15-8)
Jersey City (9-5) trailed Alvernia (7-5) to five sets in today’s opener. After dropping the first set to the Golden Wolves, the Gothic Knights fought back to win the second set. Despite falling behind for the majority of the third set, Alvernia managed to catch the NJCU and take the lead for a late win. Now in the fourth set, both teams continued to score kills back and forth. Up by just one point, NJCU claimed the set following an attacking error by Alvernia. Now in the final set, Jersey City have taken an early lead in the race to 15. Senior kills Jonathan Andrews (North Bergen, NJ/North Bergen)junior tri-captain Brandon DaSilva (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) and second Mahmoud Serour (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) closed the victory for the Verts et Or, winning the set 15-8.

Several Gothic Knights set season or career highs in the game against Golden Wolves. Andrews recorded a game-high and season-high 23 kills, while DaSilva – who just set a career high yesterday – notched a career-best 19 kills. Senior setter Leo Ferrari (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) also scored a season-high 46 assists in a single game and has a total of 321 this season.

Highlights against Alvernia:
– The team combined for a total of 16 blocks tonight. DaSilva led with a career-high 10 blocks, followed by the three-time junior captain James Bajor (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne) with seven career bests and three junior captains Hanel Collado (North Bergen, NJ/North Bergen) with a career high five.
– Ferrari finished with a season-high 15 digs, closely followed by senior Daniel Esteva (Union, NJ/Union) with 13 and Bajor with seven.
– Andrews landed four service aces; Bajor two and DaSilva with one.

Match #2: NJCU 1, Misericordia 3 (25-14, 25-19, 21-25, 25-16)
Jersey City held firm in the second game of the day against host team Misericordia (9-11). Despite dropping out of the first two sets, the Gothic Knights managed to pull away in the third. Kills of Andrews, Bajor, Collado and second year Chris Castillo (North Bergen, NJ/High Tech) helped put NJCU on top. With a few extra service aces and multiple errors from Misericordia, Jersey City won the third set 25-21.

Andrews picked up the first kill for NJCU in the fourth and final set, however, the Cougars quickly gained momentum and took an early lead. DaSilva, Serour and Castillo all recorded wins in the fourth set, but that wasn’t enough to close the deal. Misericordia won the final set 25-16, ending the day for the Gothic Knights.



Highlights against Misericordia:
– Andrews and Bajor both finished with six kills and DaSilva had four.
– DaSilva and Andrews each had two blocks, plus Ferrari with a solo block.
– Collado had a team-high seven digs, followed by Esteva with five and Bajor with four.
– Collado also had two service aces, while Castilllo picked up a single.
