Springfield Avenue Partnership obtains Main Street New Jersey designation

Today, the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs announced today that Springfield Avenue Partnership, the nonprofit organization that manages the Springfield Avenue Special Improvement District in Maplewood, received the Main Street New Jersey program designation.

“Over the years, public and private investment have built Springfield Avenue, transforming it from a county thoroughfare into a neighborhood commercial corridor. For this community effort, Springfield Avenue and the Springfield Avenue Partnership are honored to receive the designation Main Street New Jersey, ” said Nicole Wallace, Managing Director of the Springfield Avenue Partnership. “Over the coming year, the Partnership aims to invest in creating venues and orientation, and increasing the number and diversity of events.

“Springfield Avenue is a cornerstone of Maplewood and, as a municipality, we are always looking for ways to improve our business district. Being named the new Main Street neighborhood in New Jersey provides an opportunity for our bustling shopping area to enhance its living, work, play and learning environment and add tasteful signage, which will enhance the dining and shopping experience for New Jersey customers and residents. . The Partnership promotes local businesses, strives to attract new businesses and provides services such as sidewalk cleaning, maintenance of an online business directory and database of available commercial spaces and assistance with facade renovation projects.

The Main Street NJ program is an initiative to encourage and support the revitalization of downtown business districts statewide. With the designation, the Springfield Avenue Partnership can now receive technical assistance and training on how to “restore its main streets as centers of community and economic activity.” Other business districts in Bernardsville, Fair Lawn and Toms River also received the designation today.

This is the first time in six years that the MSNJ program has added new communities to its list. There are now 23 communities participating in the program, including the newly designated communities announced today.

“Our Main Street New Jersey program has shown that when a community participates in a global revitalization effort, its downtown area can experience a return to economic vitality. ” said Lieutenant Governor Shelia Oliver, who serves as DCA commissioner. “We welcome these newly nominated communities to the program and look forward to helping them take full advantage of all the resources and training now available to strengthen their inner cities and create a positive image of their business district. “

Since its inception in 1989, the MSNJ program has created a significant number of new businesses and jobs in the downtown neighborhoods participating in the program. In addition, facade improvements and building rehabilitation projects have enhanced the image of the state’s downtown business districts.

The MSNJ program is a coordination program of America’s main street, which is a subsidiary of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Main Street America’s approach is to help downtown neighborhoods develop a transformation strategy around four main points – economic vitality, design, promotion and organization – that is unique to their community and based on data from the local and regional market.

Designated MSNJ communities receive a range of services, including personalized design assistance, access to national and national specialists, training on major downtown issues, and ongoing marketing and promotions support. . They may also receive grants for small business support and neighborhood improvement projects.

To apply for the Main Street New Jersey designation, communities had to meet the following basic requirements:

  • An identifiable city center or main street;
  • Historic buildings and character;
  • Pedestrian ladder and pedestrian area;
  • Predominance of mixed-use buildings;
  • Commitment to revitalization through financial, human and political resources; and
  • Commitment to employ a full-time CEO with an adequate program operating budget for a minimum of four years if the community has more than 20,000 inhabitants.
