There have been 85,673,400 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the United States to date – and that number continues to grow.

In the New York-Newark-Jersey City metropolitan area, which covers parts of New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, a total of 5,967,342 cases of COVID-19 have been reported. Adjusted for population, there were 29,851 confirmed infections per 100,000 people in the region – above the national rate of 26,186 cases per 100,000 people.

The above average COVID-19 infection rate per capita in New York-Newark-Jersey City is due to a high concentration of the virus in one particular area.

The greater New York metropolitan area comprises 25 counties or county equivalents, which may include independent cities — and of these, Richmond County has the most COVID-19 cases per capita. So far, there have been a total of 182,695 confirmed infections in Richmond County, or 38,535 per 100,000 people.

Not only does Richmond County have the most COVID-19 infections per capita in the New York City area, but it also has more deaths from the virus per capita than the metro area as a whole. There have been a total of 499 coronavirus deaths per 100,000 people in Richmond County, compared to 404 COVID-19 deaths per 100,000 in the entire New York-Newark-Jersey City metropolitan area.
