Women’s tennis earns two wins in Loyola’s 6-1 Division I loss
BALTIMORE – The New Jersey City University women’s tennis team faced their third straight Division I opponent on Friday night, March 18, as the Gothic Knights lost one to Loyola University-Maryland by a score of 6- 1. The NJCU won third-double and second-single games on the night, but at the Division I level, the double combines for a best-of-three to seven-point overall.
Jersey City (1-3) started with a pair of doubles losses at first and second before Junior Eliza Clamor (Auckland, New Zealand/Rangitoto College) and graduate student co-captain Brittany Waugh (Stevenson Ranch, CA/West Ranch) teams up at the third double. The pair did quick work for their Division I opposition, winning 6-2.
While the Greens and Ors trailed 1-0 overall heading into singles play, the host Greyhounds (4-1) won five games in a row to take a 6-0 lead. However, Clamor continued her strong doubles game and followed it up in singles, earning a hard fought victory in three sets at the second singles. After losing the first set in a 7-6 tiebreak, Clamor won the set at 6-4. Then, playing a first-to-10 tiebreaker, winning by two points in the third “set”, Clamor fought back to a 12-10 victory to take the match.
Another solid singles game came at No. 1, where junior co-captain Giada Zorzan (Milan, Italy/Liceo dello Sport Marco Pantani) took three games from his opponent. Freshmen Vanshita Mahlotra and Mila Gligorov (Milan, Italy/San Carlo College) combined to take seven games away from their opponents at third and fourth singles, respectively, as well.
The Gothic Knights will face another Division I opponent this season when they host Wagner College in their home opener on Wednesday March 23, in a 12:00 combined doubles with the men. NJCU and the Seahawks will square off at the Lincoln Park Tennis Center in Jersey City.
