Women’s volleyball earns fourth straight win, Espinosa in career kill count

JERSEY CITY, NJ – Following Tuesday night’s historic victory over New Jersey Athletic Conference opponents Rutgers-Newark, the New Jersey City University women’s volleyball team earned its fourth straight JMAC win tonight, Sept. 15. consecutive sets (25-6, 25-9, 25-7) against Medgar Evers College and won their last 12 sets during the winning streak.

NJCU (4-2, 1-0 NJAC) started from behind early in the first set, as the Cougars (0-5-0-0) took a 3-1 lead, but it didn’t take long for the team to go on a blistering 16-0 run to regain control of the set. junior captain Sydney Lore (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) led the charge, capturing seven aces during the streak. The setter led everyone in the field today with 23 dimes and eight aces.

The next two sets were very similar for the Jersey City side, going 17-3 in the second set and 16-2 in the third set to capture the sweep. In the second set, the Gothic Knights started a 7-0 run, led by the senior captain Katrina Nguyendon (Union, NJ/Union), who collected three service aces in the meantime. Shortly after two quick points from the Cougars, the team put the pressure back on Medgar Evers with seven straight points to take a dominating lead and the set in comfortable fashion.

With the Cougars needing a set to continue the game, the New York team started the third set taking a 3-2 lead. The Gothic Knights were unwavering as they relentlessly captured 16 of the next 19 points to run away with victory in three sets.

Gothic Knights had a lot of success in the middle of the court all night, sophomore Dayshia Espinosa (El Paso, TX/Pebble Hills) had one team and a career-high 11 wins in the win. Additionally, the Texas native led the team with 13 total points and completed her first block of the season.

Making the most of his first career start in the Vert et Or was in his second year Kiki Lugo (Kearny, NJ/Kearny), as she exploded for seven kills on the night, including her first-ever point, and collected a dig. Also, sophomore classmate Brenda Gonzalez (Union City, NJ/Dickinson) continued his career-high six-game winning streak against Rutgers-Newark with seven wins tonight in the win.

Strong points:

– Senior Captain Katrina Nguyendon (Union, NJ/Union) led the team with five digs and had five service aces.

– Junior hitter Ashley Jimenez (West New York, NJ/Memorial) crushed six wins and had a dig.

– Junior hitter Paola Toledo (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic/Colegio Catolico San Rafael) powered three kills, three digs and a service ace.
