Women’s wrestling dominates SEPA tournament, winning three of four titles

NEWTOWN, Pennsylvania – New Jersey City University Women’s Wrestling Program – Receiving Votes In NCAA’s most recent National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) female coaches poll – hit the mat today, Sunday, January 30, for the Gothic Knights’ first action since mid-December. Jersey City dominated the SEPA All You Need is Faith Tournament in every way, placing first of three competing college programs (Delaware Valley University and Temple University) and winning three of four possible individual titles.

First-year student Bella Frezzo (East Rutherford, NJ / Becton Regional), competing at 116 pounds, picked up a pair of dominant drop technical wins to place first in her class. Second-year co-captain Naomi Henry (Brooklyn, NY/Wingate), who is currently the No. 5 ranked 130-pounder in the NCAA, continued her perfect season and improved to 11-0 with a pair of first-round bowlers to claim the top spot. The other second-year co-captain, Sandy Guerrero (West Orange, New Jersey/West Orange) — the NCAA-ranked 191-pound No. 7 — picked up two technical wins in the fall and a first-round pin to go 3-0 and win the title as well.


The Gothic Knights will be back on Sunday, February 6 at noon for the first-ever home duel of the schedule. NJCU will host #RV East Stroudsburg University at the John J. Moore Athletic and Fitness Center (JMAC) for the first-ever women’s collegiate wrestling match to be held in the State of New Jersey.
